Now in its 27th year, the tiny Abu's Jerusalem of the Gold (1978 N. Farwell Ave.) is Milwaukee's and Wisconsin oldest Middle Eastern restaurant. Most patrons prefer to dine at one of the restaurant's small tables, but Abu's will prepare everything for carry-out. Great food choices at Abu's are the schawarma and felafel sandwiches, both served in pita bread with lettuce, tomato and tahini. Shawarma is a mixture of beef and lamb, similar to Greek gyros or Turkish donor kebab. Hummus--chickpea fritters fragrant with cumin--remain as good as they were 20 years ago. For a bit of variety, order a lunch combination of hummus, baba ghannoug, tabuleh, schawarma, felafel, ful m'damas and a Mideast salad.
